Join the New Zealand String Quartet for an evening of toe-tapping, awe-inspiring, boundary-pushing chamber music as we perform at Barrytown Hall with a colourful programme of powerful music for string quartet, each work taking inspiration from the place of their composition and reflecting events in the lives of their composers.
Salina Fisher Tōrino – echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne
Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet No.3 in F major, Op. 73
Edvard Grieg String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27
Audience members will be treated to music that bridges the ancient and modern. Beginning with Tōrino – echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne, a powerful and haunting piece by New Zealand composer Salina Fisher, based on the reflective echoes of Whanganui’s Drury Tunnel, to the raw, emotional intensity of Shostakovich’s 3rd String Quartet and finishing with the passionate, Nordic drama of Grieg’s sweeping orchestral-sounding Quartet in G Minor.
Across their 2025 Season, the NZSQ wants to help you discover the joy of chamber music. Whether you're a life-long classical music fan, or simply looking for a memorable night out, this concert is not to be missed.
No Need to be an Expert
The concert programme, crafted in the NZSQ’s signature style, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences.
For all of our South Island concerts in May, Gill and Peter will be joined by two talented guest musicians:
Arna Morton - Guest Violin
Callum Hall - Guest Cello
