About the event

The New Zealand String Quartet Trust and Sistema Aotearoa are joining forces for a fundraiser concert to support both organisations' important work in musical education and accessibility. You'll be treated to an evening of cross-generational musical magic as the NZSQ musicians perform alongside Sistema Aotearoa's aspiring young musicians. You'll leave satisfied, knowing that all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly towards supporting the next generation of New Zealand music-makers.

For this concert, the NZSQ will perform excerpts from the following programme:

Mika Cornelius Universal Veil (new composition)

Dmitri Shostakovich String Quartet No. 1 in C major Op 49

Edvard Grieg String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27

The Sistema players' programme will be announced soon.

The New Zealand String Quartet – Te Rōpū Tūrū o Aotearoa is dedicated to nurturing and developing young artists in Aotearoa. Through our Pathways Programme we present and facilitate a range of initiatives for young musicians at all levels, from enthusiastic kids picking up an instrument for the first time, to young adults taking their first steps into the professional industry.

As a registered charity we rely on donations from passionate individuals to support our work. If you care about Aotearoa’s young classical musicians and want to play a pivotal role in their development, then we invite you to become a Pathways donor.

Sistema Aotearoa provides free, high-quality music education to tamariki in South Auckland, with a focus on building strong communities through collective music-making.

Our programme begins in partner schools, where children take part in in-school music sessions. As they progress, students are invited to join our after-school orchestras, where they continue learning in a fun, challenging, and supportive environment. From their very first notes to full orchestral performances, our students grow in confidence, teamwork, and resilience.

We also offer:

  • Holiday courses that deepen musical learning and connection

  • Public performances that celebrate progress and pride

  • Family and whānau engagement to support every child’s journey

  • Instrument loans and resources, removing financial barriers to participation

At every stage, we use music as a tool to unlock potential, foster belonging, and raise up future leaders.
