Our annual nationwide tour from 31 July – 21 August in 11 centres from Waiheke Island down to Invercargill. As the title suggests, Heartland Classics will mostly take us to the smaller regional centres around the country and will also include a few places we haven’t been for a while, such as Martinborough, Howick and Waiheke Island.
Included in the programmes are quartets from those two great pillars of the Classical era, Haydn and Mozart; Schubert’s brief but intense Quartettsatz; two of Dvorak’s short Cypresses; Mendelssohn’s exuberant Quartet no 3 in D, written shortly after his wedding; and Dvorak’s American Quartet, inspired by the American landscape. We’re proud to also be presenting recent works by two of New Zealand’s most celebrated composers, Gareth Farr and Gillian Whitehead. Gareth’s Te Tai-O-Rehua describes the turbulent waters of the Tasman Sea, while Gillian’s Poroporoaki imitates the sounds of Maori instruments, which in turn imitate the sounds of nature.
