About the event

We'll round off our visit to Dunedin on Mother's Day with Sounds of the Sanctuary at Orokonui Ecosanctuary. This programme, which premiered this March at Zealandia Ecosanctuary in Wellington to sold out crowds, showcases pieces inspired by birdsong and the natural environment.

Acclaimed New Zealand Composer Gareth Farr's Te Kōanga celebrates life and regeneration with an "extraordinary evocation of stillness and gentle birdsong" (Stuff). Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 64, No.5, The Lark showcases melodies that soar like thriving bird life. Dame Gillian Whitehead’s Poroporoaki explores taonga puoro improvisations and honors Aotearoa’s cultural and natural heritage. Finally, Antonín Dvořák's String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96, the American Quartet captures the spirit of exploration, reflecting the diverse ecosystems within the sanctuary.

Live at Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Sounds of the Sanctuary celebrates and connects us to the natural world through the power of music.

Te Korowai o Mihiwaka - Orokonui Ecosanctuary

Orokonui Ecosactuary – Te Korowai o Mihiwaka is a community-led, not-for-profit conservation project near Dunedin in the lower part of the South Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

We manage 307 hectares of Coastal Otago forest, which thanks to a 9km predator fence is free of introduced mammalian predators allowing native wildlife to thrive. Pests have been removed, habitat enhanced with weed control and planting, and many rare and endangered species re-introduced. Find out more about the species that call Orokonui home.
